about

"The Atavists," more chant than song, started with a simple acoustic bass improvisation centered around an open D drone. The accelerating beginning of the improv was cut and made into the end, a poem that was written the day before was sung, and the rest of the song was built from there.

One verse, no chorus.

"The Atavists" was recorded by Peter Richards at home in 2013 for GTG's "It's Fine" label compilation. This version was mastered by Nathan Allen at Last Drop Mastering in San Francisco, CA, January 2014.
